Looking to get involved

SSMU is seeking students to sit as undergraduate representatives on various university committees, working groups, and advisory boards.

Have you ever wanted to see how McGill works behind the scenes? Are you passionate about campus issues like student services, the academic curriculum, or equity initiatives? Do you have a great idea to improve student life? Then this is your opportunity to get involved on campus and work with both the McGill administration and SSMU!

Information about each committee can be found on the SSMU University Affairs website. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the University Affairs Secretary General. Interested students should have a desire to learn more about policy making and implementation; possess strong communication and negotiation skills; be committed to advancing students’ interests; and show an engagement with student life. Experience in student politics and an understanding of issues facing McGill students is an asset but not required. Only those who are returning to McGill as undergraduate students for both the Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 semesters are eligible.

Commitment Required

Commitment level varies considerably depending on the committee, anywhere from once per term to once per month. On average, however, committees meet 4-6 times throughout the year for between 1-2 hours at a time. Members are expected to come prepared having read the meeting documents and any background materials as necessary. Some students might choose to conduct advocacy or consultation outside of regular meetings. In addition, all undergraduate representatives are required to attend a short training at the beginning of the year and submit mid- and end-of-year reports to SSMU.

How to Apply

To apply, please fill out this form. You will be required to write a short paragraph (100-200 words) outlining how your interest and experience would make you a suitable representative, as well as attach a recent CV (2 pages maximum). You may apply to more than one committee.

Deadline: 17 April 2017 at 5:00 PM. Please fill out this form before the deadline.
