SSMU Summit on Space in the Shatner Building: Friday, February 1st

SSMU Summit on Space in the Shatner Building: Friday, February 1st

Among many other recent developments, the announcement of the departure of Travel Cuts/Voyages Campus from the SSMU Building, marks a changing landscape of space in our campus’ only undergraduate student-run building.

Whether you want a student-run cafe, more bookable space, a gym, or more club offices, come have your say! This is a historic opportunity, and our big chance to make a big impact on the priorities of this building.

Tentative Agenda is as follows: Please come to learn and share your thoughts on any session on its own, or come for the whole day!

*after each session, there will be 15 minutes allotted to tying the session back to a broader visioning of the goals and mission of the building.

noon-12:30pm: Presentation from SSMU Executives Josh & Allison about the history and long-term visioning efforts of the building and current student proposals and projects

12:30-1pm: Food! — what kind of food operations do we want to see in the building? What values should our food services reflect?

1:15pm-2pm: Student-run Cafe — what defines “student-run”? What format will its space and management take? Discussion of the history of the project & the SRC case competition.

2:15pm-2:45pm: Prioritization of Room Categorization — what kinds of space do we most want to see in the buidling: lounge, offices, fancy event spaces, small meeting rooms, commercial food operations, …? Should we have more specialized or multipurpose space? What is lacking on campus that this building should provide?

3:00pm-3:30pm: Event space — a discussion of room bookings, advanced room bookings, alcohol event procedures, equipment, and space: what kinds of events do we want to be able to host in the building?

3:45pm-4:15pm: Sustainability in the Building — Universal Design and access, costs of operating the building, transforming an ancient building to be sustainable

4:15pm: Final Visioning Session & Mingling

Snacks and a light lunch will be provided.
