Memorandum Regarding Inaccurate Journalism

Memorandum Regarding Inaccurate Journalism

Dear students,

It has come to our attention that following the General Assembly on February 22, 2016, the Montreal Gazette, published an article that misquoted the President of the SSMU, an act which has likely caused misinformation and discomfort in the community. The article wrote, “[Ibrahim] really hoped that Jews on campus won’t feel alienated.” when, in fact, this is inaccurate. Ibrahim actually stated that he hoped “that no one on campus feels alienated”, which is quite different from what was published in the Gazette and then shared in the National Post.

Although the quote has been retracted from all the articles, the SSMU maintains that the distribution of this kind of misinformation is detrimental to McGill, the SSMU, and our campus community.

Sincerely,

Students’ Society of McGill University
