Waste Management

We are committed to promote sustainability across our buildings

We manage collection schedules, recycling programs, and initiatives to minimize our environmental footprint. Learn how you can participate and help keep our campus clean and green.

Waste Collection & Sorting

Proper sorting is crucial for our recycling and composting programs. Find designated bins throughout the University Centre (3480 McTavish) and SSMU Office (3501 Peel).

Recycling
Paper, cardboard, plastics #1-7 (check local guidelines), metal cans, glass bottles/jars. Ensure items are clean and dry.

Compost/Organics
Food scraps, soiled paper products (napkins, paper towels), coffee grounds, tea bags.

Landfill
Non-recyclable plastics, styrofoam, chip bags, broken ceramics, items contaminated with food.

Collection Schedule
Daily collection from high-traffic areas, with building-wide pickup on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Bin Locations
Waste sorting stations are available on every floor of both buildings, with additional stations in high-traffic areas like cafeterias and lounges.

Special Waste Disposal

  • Hazardous Waste: Batteries, electronics (e-waste), chemicals, paint. Do not place in regular bins. Special collection points are available at the Building Services office. For chemicals or paint, please contact Building Services directly for proper disposal instructions.
  • Large Items: Furniture, equipment. Contact Building Services to arrange for removal or disposal.
Waste Reduction Initiatives

Our Goal: We actively work to reduce overall waste generation.

Examples:

  • Promoting reusable containers and water bottles
  • Water fountain and bottle refill stations throughout buildings
  • Reusable mug discounts at campus cafes
  • Zero-waste event guidelines for student groups

How You Can Help: Choose reusables, sort waste correctly, and participate in campus sustainability events.

Frequently Asked Question

Where does our recycling/compost go?

Recycling is processed through the City of Montreal’s recycling program. Compost is collected and processed at a local composting facility.

What happens if I sort incorrectly?

Incorrect sorting can contaminate entire batches of recycling or compost, potentially sending them to landfill. Please take a moment to sort correctly!

How do I dispose of batteries/old electronics?

Bring them to the designated e-waste collection point at the Building Services office during regular hours.
