Waste Management

Waste Management at the University Centre

SSMU’s waste management efforts are part of a larger movement. Both McGill University and the City of Montreal are committed to ambitious sustainability goals, and our collective actions at the University Centre contribute directly to their success.

McGill’s Zero-Waste Vision

Our program is a key part of McGill’s goal to become a zero-waste campus by 2035. This means diverting at least 90% of our waste from landfills through reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting.

Montreal’s Waste Reduction Strategy

Our efforts at SSMU align with the city’s vision for a more sustainable and resilient metropolis. Learn more at the City of Montreal’s Environment page.

Compost Disposal for Building Occupants

To facilitate our new composting program, we have established a new system for building occupants in the University Centre.

  • Location: Three large, 240L compost bins are located in the cold room on the S2 level
  • Procedure: Bring compostable waste to these bins by 8:00 PM every Wednesday evening
  • Bin Rotation: Fill the bins in numerical order (1, 2, then 3). Do not overfill the bins.
  • Fourth Floor: A communal compost bin is located near room 401 for occupants on the fourth floor

Frequently Asked Question

Why are we making these changes?

These changes are essential to align with McGill’s campus-wide sustainability goals, which restrict what can be sent to landfills. Our waste audit showed a clear need for a better system to handle compostable waste.

What happens to the compost?

The City of Montreal brings our organic waste to a local composting facility, where it is processed and turned into nutrient-rich soil for landscaping and agricultural use.

How can I get a compost bin for my office/space?

Building occupants are responsible for their own compost receptacles. You can order a standard compost bin from the City of Montreal or use any container that suits your space.

What about hazardous waste?

Hazardous materials, such as chemicals, batteries, and electronics, must be disposed of through McGill’s Hazardous Waste Management program. Do not place these items in any of the four main waste streams.
