“BURST YOUR BUBBLE” campaign- go beyond the scope of the downtown campus

The Social Equity and Diversity Education (SEDE) Office of McGill University in collaboration with the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) is delighted to present our third annual “BURST YOUR BUBBLE” campaign which will take place from January 28 – March 17, 2010. If you have been fortunate enough to take part in our previous campaigns, you know that you shouldn’t miss this! If you are new at McGill, or simply have never had the chance to attend one of our visits, we are looking forward to meeting you this year! Please take the time to read the information below before signing up for an
activity.

Thank you for your support and we hope to see you very soon!

What is “Burst Your Bubble” all about?

Do you find yourself going through each week tracing and re-tracing the same trajectory and not really leaving your home-McGill-library/work/grocery store-home sphere? Through the “Burst Your Bubble” campaign, SEDE aims to give McGill students and community members the chance to see Montreal beyond the scope of the downtown campus and surrounding area. We hope to explore some of Montreal’s ethno-cultural and social richness in order to enhance our understanding and appreciation of our many diverse backgrounds and identities. In the past, we have found that this initiative has encouraged students and on-campus groups to connect with other Montreal communities, share and deepen their knowledge and establish meaningful relationships and dialogue. In the future, we also hope to see the creation of sustainable collaborative forums as a result of this campaign.

How to get involved?

The first part of this initiative comprises a series of Community Visits, where we will be hosted by various local organizations for a presentation about the communities they represent, services they offer, and current issues for the community in Montreal. Each visit will be accompanied by a meal component (all free!)… The novelty this year is that we will be hosting a community visit each month in order to give everyone the chance to participate. Here is the list of visits planned for this semester:

v Naqshbandi Sufi Centre of Montreal (Sufi prayers and meditation centre)
Thursday, January 28, 2010
Time: 5:00pm

v Kanien’kehaka Raotitiohkwa Cultural Centre (Mohawk culture and
language centre)
Date & Time: TBA

v Alfie Roberts Institute (Black community educational centre)

Date & Time: TBA

Please note that space is limited for each visit and they fill up
pretty quickly. So, make sure to RSVP* by SOON to
reserve your spot!

To wrap up our campaign, we will be hosting “Community Connections”,
an evening where students and other McGill Community members will have
a chance to network and share with representatives from Montreal
community organizations. These groups will be present to highlight
their projects and initiatives as well as student involvement
opportunities such as volunteering, internship placements and research
projects. We hope you will take this opportunity to network with
members of the McGill and greater Montreal Communities over some
delicious food!
