SSMU Statement on a Fall Reading Break

SSMU Statement on a Fall Reading Break

Dear SSMU Members,

On Wednesday, May 13th, 2020, the McGill University Senate passed changes to the Guidelines Regarding the Setting of the University Calendar of Academic Dates, facilitating the implementation of a Fall Reading Break at McGill, at the earliest, by Fall 2021. This change comes after years of student advocacy by the SSMU to bring about a Fall Reading Break. In the coming months, the SSMU will continue to advocate for the required academic calendar changes for future years.

In certain years, the academic calendar will change to have classes begin before Labour Day and in the month of August, in order to make room in the fall semester for a Fall Reading Break. The Fall Reading Break itself will last from anywhere between five to nine days, including weekends, around Canadian Thanksgiving. If you are interested in learning more about the proposed academic calendar changes, you can find the Senate motion here.

The SSMU would like to acknowledge the work of previous students, including Alexander Dow (2016-2017 EUS Senator), Tre Mansdoerfer (2018-2019 SSMU President), members of the SSMU Ad-Hoc Fall Reading Break Committee, and JED Consulting, whose tireless work on advocating for a Fall Reading Break over the past few years has led to these changes that we see today.

Kindest regards,
