If you’re a McGill undergraduate, you’re automatically enrolled in the SSMU StudentCare plan unless you opt out. It is an affordable and comprehensive health and dental insurance plan.

StudentCare is becoming ALUMO. As the service transitions to its new name, you may see both namesused interchangeably. Don’t worry, it’s still the same provider.

Health: prescription drugs, ambulance, medical supplies, mental health
Dental: exams/cleanings, x-rays, basic dental treatments.
Vision: eye exams + glasses/contacts.
Travel: emergency medical coverage
Virtual + Legal: online consultations + legal advice for common student issues.

Who’s covered
  • Canadian & Quebec students
  • Undergraduate students on the downtown campus, including Law, Medicine, and Dentistry students
    Registered in the fall semester
    Paying Canadian or Quebec tuition rates
  • International students
    International students are eligible only for the StudentCare Dental Plan. and are automatically charged by the International Health Insurance plan (Blue Cross) instead of the Student Care Health Plan.

  • Students with equivalent private coverage
    You may be eligible to opt out during the opt-out period. Please note that proof may be required

*You won’t be automatically enrolled – you can enroll from January 2nd to the 19th by contacting StudentCare/ALUMO.
**International undergrads are typically covered by the Dental Plan only

Opt-in | Opt-Out

 

Opting Out

Only students may make changes to their coverage.

  • You can opt out of StudentCare/ALUMO if you or your parents have private insurance which covers you. Most parental plans last until you are 25.
  • You can opt out only if you already have equivalent coverage.
  • Opt-outs are not automatic; you must submit a request each year during the opt-out period.

Opt-out period:
Fall > Aug 13, 2025 – Sep 26, 2025
Winter > Dec. 10, 2025 – Jan. 29, 2026 ⁠

Opting In
  • You can enroll your spouse, common-law partner and/or dependents for an extra fee.
  • Students starting during the Winter semester need to enroll by contacting StudentCare/ALUMO.

How to submit a claim
  1. Submit in Omni or the StudentCare claims portal.
  2. Upload a clear receipt (date • provider • amount).

Common claim mistakes:

  • Blurry or non-itemized receipts
  • Wrong service date
  • Missing supporting documents
