Another SSMU Statement Regarding McGill’s Renovation Project at the University Centre

Dear SSMU Members,

For those of you who enrolled at McGill in Winter 2020, welcome. We hope this is the only time you have to receive this message. For returning students, you already know what this is going to say.

In our last message to the community regarding renovations at the University Centre, we relayed the McGill administration’s update that the project might not be complete until March 2020. This provided us a tentative timeline of April for reopening and use. However, we have, yet again, received word from McGill that the completion of the project has been further delayed. The project is now scheduled to be completed by June 2020 and open to the public in July 2020.

These delays in the reopening of the building have placed, and continue to place, real burdens on SSMU groups and the Centre’s tenants: a lack of space for meetings and events, a constantly shifting timeline, and the loss of a central home and community for students. Therefore, we encourage our student body to express how the University Centre closure has affected you by filling out this form. In the coming weeks, we will be summarizing all of the responses we receive and delivering them to the McGill administration to highlight just how much these continued delays hurt our student community.

If you have any questions about the project, you can fill out McGill Construction Projects’ Feedback/Question Form or email construction.feedback@mcgill.ca. You can also visit the Building Closure page for more information regarding the current location of SSMU student groups.
