Presidential Candidates

Hamza Abu-Alkhair

Hey McGill,

Your inbox might be full because of me! Over the past few years, I’ve served as Services Representative, President of the ASN, and currently as the VP of Clubs & Services. I’ve worked with student groups navigating bureaucracy, managed multi-million dollar budgets, and participated directly in SSMU governance and reform.

I’m running because I believe SSMU can be more accessible, stable, and trusted by the students it represents. My full platform outlines a clear plan to rebuild transparency, strengthen community, and restore confidence in our student society.

Thanks y’all!

Laurence Desjardins (S.T.A.N.D.)

Growing up in and around Montreal, I have had the chance to engage in several grassroots initiatives and organizing, such as facilitating feminist discussion groups in CEGEP, planning community skill workshops with McGill’s GSFSSA, and contributing to one of QPIRG’s committees. My time in the GSFS Student Association has given me valuable skills and familiarity with student politics at McGill, skills which I will use to advocate for your needs.

As president, I promise to listen to students’ voices and to STAND up to defend your interests.

My promises:

  • Opposing the increase of surveillance, contracts to GardaWorld, and the new Identification Policy
  • Pushing for divestment from all parties complicit in the genocide in Palestine
  • Defend student democracy by holding more GAs
  • Work closely with marginalized communities to act against all discrimination
  • Improve the Students Accessibility & Achievement
  • Fund and support sustainability initiatives and Zero Waste objectives

VP Clubs & Services Candidates

Mars Gagawchuk (S.T.A.N.D.)

Hello, my name is Mars Gagawchuk, and I am running to serve as your following VP Clubs and Services with S.T.A.N.D.

I maintain sustained involvement in the IGSFS community, contributing to mutual aid initiatives and serving as a research assistant with a Feminist Scholarship Lab. As Communications Coordinator for the GSFS Student Association, I oversee departmental communications and facilitate clear, accountable engagement between GSFS students. My organizing is grounded in grassroots advocacy, community-based workshops, and student mobilization efforts.

If elected, I will prioritize addressing food insecurity by reinstating Midnight Kitchen and expanding accessible meal programming. I will advocate for reassessing underutilized campus spaces to support clubs and services better, collaborate with faith-based groups to address prayer space capacity, and push to destigmatize and deinstitutionalize mental health support. I am committed to a student-first vision in which clubs and services can thrive meaningfully.

Acadia Knickerbocker

My name is Acadia, and I’m excited to be your VP Clubs & Services.
Over the past year, I have served the SSMU Governance Team as Speaker of the House, streamlining internal processes to give elected representatives greater agency and developing the reform-focused strategy I will apply to the logistical and financial barriers I have witnessed for three years as a club executive.
It is my job to make resources like building space, funding, storage, and equipment faster and accessible so clubs and services have the agency to realize projects and reach more students. Having closely followed ongoing planning, I am further excited to implement the Athletics Department, working with team captains to individualize the support needed to practice and compete.

Clubs, services, athletics, and ISGs are student life. I’m running to put the tools in your hands to bring our campus to life.

VP Internal Affairs Candidates

Mia Duddy-Hayashibara (S.T.A.N.D.)

I’m Mia Duddy-Hayashibara, and I am running to be your next VP Internal Affairs with S.T.A.N.D!

I have a passion for event-organizing and communications and have experience as a festival production intern with Suoni Per Il Popolo and as an Environmental Residence Council member. If elected, I plan on improving SSMU communications to increase accessibility to important services that students deserve to take full advantage of. I will continue organizing traditions like 4 floors as well as create events to platform student artists, organizers, and collectives to showcase their work and build stronger culture on campus. I will make SSMUs internal processes more transparent, so students are in the loop and decisions are made openly. Lastly, I will ensure SSMU’s partnerships are aligned with BDS to keep in line with our Policy Against Genocide in Palestine.

Together, our slate is running for Transparency, Anti-Austerity, New Voices, and Democracy!

Anna El Mur

Hi everyone!

My name is Anna El Murr, and I’m a Chemical Engineering student running for VP Internal! You might already know me or seen me around campus in McLennan 2nd.

Since joining McGill, I’ve been involved in ChESS FYC, Concrete Canoe, and coordinating MERTW, all experiences that deepened my understanding of student community. Beyond engineering, my time in MUN and as Engineering Representative at SSMU has strengthened my communication, organization, and advocacy skills all of which I’ll bring to this role.

As VP Internal, I want to create events where every student feels genuinely welcome; bilingual, inclusive, and sober-friendly from the start. But beyond events, VP Internal means making sure communications actually reach you, that first-years feel genuinely welcomed, and that your voice shapes what SSMU does.

Feel free to reach out or find my platform on Instagram @anna4vpinternal!

Vote Anna and let’s make McGill feel like home 🙂

Sophie Smithson

Hi! I’m Sophie (she/her), a third-year Civil Engineering student. I truly believe student life should be welcoming, accessible, and intentionally planned so every student feels connected and supported. As EUS VP Internal, I oversaw Frosh, E-Week, Blues, First-Year Engagement, and more. I managed large budgets and teams, strengthened partnerships, expanded inclusive programming, lowered costs, and improved operations.

My platform centers on three priorities: accessible and intentional programming, stronger structure and accountability, and deeper engagement across campus. I will focus on:

  • Event Planning: Improve logistics and affordability while expanding low-barrier events.
  • Communications: Strengthen listserv transparency, social media, and feedback systems.
  • First-Year Experience: Work closely with FYC to support welcoming programming.
  • Interfaculty Relations: Strengthen collaboration between faculties.
  • Alumni Engagement: Grow networking, panels, and mentorship opportunities.

Vote Sophie for a more connected and engaged community!

Maggie Tang

Hi McGill! I’m Maggie Tang (she/her), a third-year, experienced student running to be SSMU VP Internal. I’ve spent my entire university career inside the student government, from Arts Undergraduate Society’s HR Admin to Faculty of Arts Senator to working directly with the SSMU President and VP Internal. I truly understand how the system works, its flaws, and how to improve it from the inside out. However, this campaign isn’t about my résumé – it’s about YOUR EXPERIENCE.

My platform is built on three pillars: Inclusivity, Safety, and Good Vibes. That means more FREE events, more dry options, a focus on building community for first-years and international students, meaningful mental health initiatives, and career fairs that actually help students prepare for what comes next.

This role isn’t about pushing politics, but it’s about building community. McGill should feel fun, connected, and accessible to everyone. I would be honoured to serve as your VP Internal and help make OUR vision a reality!!

VP External Affairs Candidates

Justice Bongiovanni

Hi everyone! I’m Justice Bongiovanni, a U2 Political Science student running as your Vice President of External Affairs to the SSMU. McGill students deserve a responsible student government. As a Legislative Councillor and Arts Representative, I’ve seen where the SSMU fails students, It’s time to reform the SSMU’s Executive team and bring power and affordability back to the student body,

The SSMU exists to serve YOU, and I will ensure that they use YOUR money responsibly, to serve YOU.

My-4-Point-Plan.

Safia Haiboub (S.T.A.N.D.)

Hi everyone! I’m Safia Haiboub (she/her), and I’m excited to be running for VP External Affairs with S.T.A.N.D.

I’ve worked at Gerts Café, served as an Executive with the SSMUnion, and worked in External Affairs. I’ve discovered how passionate I am about advocating for students beyond campus. I’ve built strong relationships with Montreal organizations, and I know how to turn those connections into real opportunities for students.

If elected, I’ll organize networking events that connect you with local organizations, jobs, and internships, so you graduate with meaningful experience. I’ll strengthen student representation across Montreal and ensure our voices are heard. As a Muslim and Arab student, I’m committed to expanding prayer spaces and uplifting Arab and Muslim representation. I’ll also support political campaigns against Bills 21 and C-12, standing up for our communities.

I believe in principled, community-driven leadership, and I would be honored to earn your vote.

Harry Wang

Dear McGill,

As a first-gen immigrant, I never could have imagined that an 11-y/o who didn’t speak any English would eventually run to be an elected student leader at McGill. From advocating in provincial education as a School Board Trustee to serving as the expert on company policy as SSMU parliamentarian, I have developed pragmatic leadership that focuses on results.

My priorities:

  • Subsidizing low-income students facing tuition hikes and food insecurity — while being honest about what SSMU can and cannot control.
  • Supporting Francophone and minority(BIPOC, LGBTQ+, etc) students through cultural celebrations.
  • Improve government service accessibility for students.
  • Building an online housing platform for cheaper rent
  • Tackling transportation poverty with external collaboration (flights, trains, etc.)
  • Develop an accountability mechanism to prevent unilateral political spending when allocating students’ money to political campaigns
  • Media engagement to explain the structure/funding process

My commitment is simple: Students first — Always.

VP University Affairs Candidates

Cecelia Callaghan (S.T.A.N.D.)

Over my time in Montreal, I have engaged in meaningful grassroots initiatives at every opportunity provided, which has given me valuable perspective into the real needs of our community. These experiences have taken many forms, from hosting feminist radio segments on CKUT 90.3 FM, to cooking up hundreds of free student meals with Midnight Kitchen, to welcoming new students to campus as a QPIRG Rad Frosh Facilitator. My experience in student governance with restarting the Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, & Social Justice Student’s Association, and my time sitting on AUS Legislative Council has given me the necessary skills to advocate for your needs. If elected I will advocate for anti-austerity initiatives, BDS, gender-affirming care, mental health support, a policy against AI on campus, and opposing the new Identification Policy. Meghan Lai

Hi! I’m Meghan. For the past year, I’ve been your Education Student Senator, and now I’m running to be your SSMU VP UA!

In just a year, I have:

  • Kept student discipline (the Code of Student Conduct) under the purview of Senate, not the Board of Governors.
  • Conducted a survey asking students about their academic life to determine what best supports students’ learning.
  • Met with administration and student leaders to (1) develop clear processes that protect students’ right to protest and strike and (2) enforce and revise PASL (Policy on Assessment of Learning) to alleviate students’ academic stress

My ABC’s are the pillars of my platform and will guide my work throughout the year.

A – Academics (enhancing Teaching & Learning across campus)
B – Bridge (improving Student Services through systemic solutions)
C – Community (emphasizing a campus culture of connection, inclusion, and care)
