What is SSMU? (Pronounced “SMOO”)
The Students’ Society of McGill University is more than just a student government. Is is the organization responsible for housing and financing the 200+ clubs and services that make student life at McGill much more than only academia. SSMU also tackles academis issues and represents you to McGill. Every undergraduate on the downtown campus at McGill is a member of SSMU. For more information please check out ssmu.mcgill.ca!
Is Frosh some sort of code for initiation?
No. Frosh is about welcoming first-year students to McGill and introducing them to the Montreal community. There is absolutely no hazing or degrading rituals, Frosh is composed of parties, campus events and trips to different Montreal locales,
Is Frosh all about Drinking?
Frosh events are designed so that every participant will be able to enjoy themselves regardless of what they are drinking, You don’t need to get loaded like a bazooka to have a good time. We try to promote responsible drinking throughout our events and provide non-alcoholic beverages at all times.
*Excessive consumption of alcohol resulting in danger may force frosh leaders or coordinators to prevent intoxicated individuals from partaking in frosh events.
Do I have to choose between Faculty and SSMU Frosh?
You can and are encouraged to do both! Many faculties (Arts, Management, Science, Music, Nursing, Med) host a frosh on August 25-27. Faculty frosh is a great place to meet people in your faculty in the first couple of days of orientation week. Every undergraduate however is at SSMU Frosh during the weekend, so it is consequently the biggest frosh where we all come together!
What is RAD Frosh? Fish Frosh?
Two alternate options to frosh are RAD and Fish Frosh. RAD (Radical) frosh is operated by QPIRG (Quebec Public Interest Research Group) and runs at the same time as SSMU Frosh. RAD frosh focuses on social justice issues, sustainability and volunteering on and off campus. More information in the panflet provided in the mailout. Fish Frosh is designated for students of the Christian following. See page 8 for more info.
Can I sign up to individual events and not SSMU Frosh in its entirety?
No. All frosh activities are planned in order to accommodate the 2000 students participating. If you chose not to do SSMU Frosh, you will not be granted access to separate events.
Can older students/students from other universities participate in SSMU Frosh?
No. SSMU Frosh is explicitly for first year McGill students. With the exception of Q-staff and O-staff as well as other coordinators/frosh organizers, all the SSMU Frosh participants are going to first years.
Is there any way to get my money back once I’ve paid?
We do not reimburse students once the payment for frosh has been paid. With emergency or extenuating circumstances, the course of action will be at the executive councils discretion.
Want to get Involved at McGill?
There are a number of ways to get involved at McGill. Be sure to come to Activities Night in Shatner in early September to view all the 200+ clubs that you can get involved with. Whether you are interested in student politics or improving the McGill community, Rez Council and FYC (first year committee on SSMU Council) are two options for first years. First Year Office
Staffed by returning students and McGill administrators who are eager to answer all your questions, the orientation center has info on everything from directions around campus, to student services information, to tourist sites and much more. Shatner University Center
Named after one of McGill’s most famous graduates (Star Trek’s William Shatner), Shatner is YOUR building. With yummy/healthy restaurants, Gerts Bar, the ballroom, Players Theater, service and club offices, it is the ultimate student union. SSMU offices are also located here!
Gerts Bar
This is YOUR campus bar. It is open all week long for students to chill, play pool, play foosball and watch hockey/football fames on multiple bigscreen tvs. For cheap drinks and good times, Gerts is the place to be! Red Thunder – McGill’s exciting varsity fan club – hosts many of it’s fantastic pre-party events there!
